Bikeability National Standard Cycling Training

Cycle Staffordshire is Accredited to hold Bikeability Training.

We are dedicated to encouraging more people to cycle more often, one way of doing this is through education. It is proven that with knowledge comes confidence, and the more confident you are, the more likely you are to ride your bike more often.

Evidence from local authorities shows significant increases in the number of children cycling to school where cycling has been integrated with a full range of cycle promotion activities and infrastructure improvements.

We deliver our cycle training in 3 levels, these levels are as set out by the new National Standard Cycle Training Scheme, which replaces the now out of date cycle proficiency test.

  • Level 1 :- Suited for completely new cyclists, this level teaches the basics of riding a bike on the road, but in a safe, off the highway environment. Using mock junctions and obstacles, the rider will develop an understanding of road position and bike handling ability. Level 1 is usually accomplished in 1 or 2, 2hr sessions.

  • Level 2 :- Building on the level 1 training, we look at the more detailed aspects of riding on the road. These are taught in a real highway environment using quite junctions at first, and then moving up to more busier roads as the riders confidence and ability develops. By the end of this level, the rider will be able to confidently undertake a short journey, demonstrating confidence in traffic, road positioning and safely pass through junctions. This level is usually completed in around 2 or 3, 2hr sessions.

  • Level 3 :- This level builds on level 2, completing the national standard training scheme. Participants learn more about riding on the road in heavier traffic by doing the training in a real environment setting. Dealing with the more complex issues like roundabouts and multi lane junctions, level 3 is aimed more for the inner city cyclist that would like to be more confident on their journeys. This level is usually completed in around 3, 2hr sessions.

If you would like us to arrange for training for your group or school please contact us for details. We can also supply bikes and equipment if needed.
